Ahead of this weekend’s Quakecon, it’s time to frag like it’s 1996!
If you happen to own the PS5 or PS4 version of id Software’s iconic Quake, then good news: it’s just been updated with an all-new 19-level campaign, designed by MachineGames.
Dawn of the Machine, developed to celebrate the series’ 30th anniversary, is free for everyone who owns a copy of the iconic FPS – and also includes all-new music and a fresh deathmatch map.
It’s the ultimate birthday present for fans of the franchise.
“Dawn of the Machine has players back in the boots of Quake’s battle-hardened protagonist Ranger as he escapes an illusory dimension where time folds back onto itself. As the looping cycle of time progresses, so too will players as they discover ways to break the loop, uncover upgrades to their health and ammunition supplies, and eventually take down The Nightmare Machine, the source of Ranger’s planar prison.”

Some fans believe there may be more surprises at Quakecon this week, with Raven’s brilliant 2009 Wolfenstein reboot also rumoured to get a re-release.
For now, I’m more than satisfied with this new Quake campaign – and if you want in on the fun, both the original game and its sequel are heavily discounted on the PS Store right now, and can be picked up for a few bucks.
There’s never been a better time to own a copy of Quake – well, other than in 1996, I suppose.
